This teetering stack of curves and angles is a calm and comfortable Sicilian retreat

Crudo is a fabulous modern villa for six sandwiched between the hills and the sea close to the baroque towns of southeast Sicily.

The layered design is architecturally bold with curves softening the angles, and a slim infinity pool boldly balanced on top with a showstopping flourish.

Equally impressive is the connection to its location. From above it’s hard to see that there’s even a house here. It appears to rise out of the land, with the local travertine stone used in its walls and floors.

The thoughtfulness of the design shines through in the division of space. The living area is on the upper layer to take in the views and the exterior, while the bedrooms are below, offering privacy and calm, with warm wood softening the light.

This is a retreat for a group of friends or family who value design that celebrates form and function, and comfort, too. The location close to the baroque town of Noto and the beaches of the Vendicari nature reserve is as excellent as the villa itself.

Rooms description

Bedrooms

The three en-suite bedrooms are on the lower level. They have large beds, floor-to-ceiling glass doors onto the terrace, air conditioning, heating, and room darkening blinds.

Bathrooms

The shower rooms are in Modica stone and have high-performance fixtures and fittings. There is an outdoor shower as well.

Kitchen

The gloss white kitchen has everything you need and is separated from the living room by a large, layered stack of local stone. Eat at the circular dining table inside or at the stone, rectangular table on the terrace behind.

Living rooms

The living area is in the middle of the building and has glass walls on either side. In truth, you’ll spend more of your time outside, either by the pool or on either one of the end terraces with their comfy lounge sets.

Outside

The hills around the villa have long been quarried for their stone and the sheltered end terrace pays homage to this history. With rugs and comfy mattresses that can be rested against the sloping walls, it is protected from the wind and makes the perfect spot for reading and relaxing. The villa’s grass roof means the building’s aerial footprint is barely visible, while the slim rectangular pool is a feat of engineering, balancing at an angle on top. Climb the stairs that resemble those of an Olympic high diving board and take a dip in one of the most impressive private pools we know. The landscaped Mediterranean garden is a heady mix of local herbs, grasses and flowers and the pool terrace is a magnificent place to lounge in the sun looking over the citrus and olive groves to the sea. The glass walls of the living room open onto a veranda, also with incredible views, where you can dine outside, see the star-dotted sky at night and catch the sun rise and set over this beautiful coastal landscape.

Notes

Please be aware that the property is not suitable for small children and particular care needs to be taken around the pool and terraces. If you would like a similar property that is child-friendly, we suggest Massa, the sister villa to this one.

Your villa and Covid-19

To prevent any possible spread of Covid-19 and to enable you to enjoy a safe and relaxing holiday, all our villas are cleaned to the highest standard possible, and according to the latest Italian health and safety regulations.

Perfect hygiene: to ensure an exceptional level of hygiene in all our villas, we’ve worked with our owners to create a Covid-19 villa management protocol. Based on recommendations from the World Health Organisation, and in compliance with current Italian national law, this protocol goes above and beyond our usual rigorous cleaning standards.

Prior to arrival, your villa will have been fully sanitised, including all surfaces, objects, kitchen items, curtains, sofas, throws, pillows, toys, and in and around the pool. You are welcome to ask for a detailed list of the entire cleaning procedure we do after each departure and before welcoming new guests to the property.

The owner of this house has complied with the following standards:

  • To ensure the necessary information concerning social distancing and the use of masks is available to all guests
  • To guarantee availability of and accessibility to hand hygiene systems with hydro-alcoholic solutions and soaps in all inside areas of, and pertaining to, the villa
  • To guarantee cleaning and disinfection of all areas according to national authority guidelines. Further information is available on request
  • For the swimming pool: to guarantee the efficacy of the water treatments, while respecting legal limits (the parameter for free active chlorine in the pool is between 1.0 – 1.5 mg/l; combined chlorine ≤ 0.40 mg/l; pH 6.5 – 7.5 or equivalent oxygen)
  • For air conditioning systems: to guarantee the air re-circulation function is switched off and, according to the manufacturer’s instructions, with the plant in off-mode, to clean the air filters of the heating/cooling plants that use heat pumps, fan coils and convectors, at the end of each stay
