Bracco di nero
A magnificent and comfortable property that is full of romance and grandeur
Bracco di Nero sits on the western edge of Italy’s heel, close to the lovely coastal town of Gallipoli. An old masseria, it has been carefully restored, retaining original architectural features such as star-vaulted ceilings, vast stone fireplaces, and ancient wall niches. It is a house that wears its history proudly, with the subtle addition of present-day comforts.
Both the interior and the garden offer a masterclass in subtle luxe. It sleeps ten in five light-filled bedrooms and guests have the pick of three sitting rooms. All are decorated with the lightest of touches, letting the architecture sing with an accompaniment of contemporary artwork, some of which is by the owner, one of Italy’s most notable contemporary artists.
Much of southern Italian life is lived around the table and guests can choose between the kitchen, the vaulted dining room, a stone table shaded by olive trees on the terrace outside the kitchen, or an impressively sized wooden table in the internal courtyard - a stunning setting for long dinners or small private events under the stars.
The tall waving palms, gnarled olive trees and gravel Mediterranean garden are welcoming in their informality, while the large, cobbled terrace with its soft seating is the perfect spot to admire the entire scene, bathed in the glorious light that is particular to Puglia. And then there is the pool that matches the best hotels’ thanks to its welcoming colour, admirable size and lovely stone surround, with views down the olive grove.
Bracco di Nero is well placed for exploring sun-baked Salento. There are shops, bars and restaurants in Alezio and Gallipoli, as well as the pick of the sandy beaches and rocky coves of the Ionian coast. Or head east to the Adriatic. You will be drawn willingly back to the charm and romance of this very special property.
